One thing I used to like a lot about my country is how we were able to make fun of our government for being so shitty. I thought that was a strength.
We live under the impression that what makes our country beautiful are the imperfections; the favela lights at night (that are followed by the hearing of gunshots); the colours of the carnival (that can be extent into a 3 weeks long vacation); the beautiful beaches and the gritty street corners; our rich nature (that’s diminishing instead of growing)… We paint our image with shinny gloss to hide the rust. We make fun of our corrupt government to pretend that nothing’s wrong and we present our violent streets, shanty towns and poverty as “culture” that makes for beautiful movies and telenovelas…
If you were to ask any taxi driver, or house keeper, teacher, student or passer by, they’d tell you exactly where the problem is. We want to grow without having to address the basic issues that makes a society thrive.
Like stated in our flag: “Ordem e progresso” (order and progress). And that begins by trusting the right people to run our country, which’s nothing to joke about.
